Talking to Teenagers

We are at home, my daughter and I.  It is morning and I am having to wait in for good old British Gas to call round and replace the water cylinder they mis-sold us last year.

We are laughing hysterically at some really silly animal photos that she is showing me on her Instagram feed and I comment that one of her friends is 'soppy' about animals. (Old fashioned word, but it fitted the bill perfectly).  The following conversation ensues:-

Her:  I'm glad I'm not soppy.  I'm more....what's the word?  That other word...you know ...also begins with 's'....can't think of it....

Me: Sweet? Sneaky?  Silly?

Her:  No, no and no!  You know it....it's on the tip of my tongue...

Me:   Safe? Saturated? Scummy?

Her: No!  Be serious - this is driving me mad!

Me:  Seasick? Sizzling?  Sebaceous?

Her:  Gaaah!

Me: Skint? Stupid?  Solipsistic?

Her:  NO!  Oh wait - I've got it - CYNICAL!  Yeah, that's it.

Me: (Attempting to speak despite mouthful of carpet)  I'm so glad all that money we spent on your education wasn't wasted......*crawls away weeping gently*

Here's me reading the anonymous comment and trying to make sense of it - no idea why as I have hundreds of those on my own blog.

    1. It is good to know others are in the same boat, isn't it? I have really resisted putting comment moderation on but may have to if I get too many more of them :-(

  9. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to
my blog that automatically tweet my newest
twitter updates. I've been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

  11. Ha ha! Wait....soppy is old fashioned??? That makes me feel sooo auuuld! You should see a child that has been through Californian education system ( and more specifically Oakland public) education. i did tell you about how my son wrote his most recent Inglish essay on The kardashians didn't I? And Tallulah thought the president of Mexico was Lindsay Lohan.

    1. Soppy feels old fashioned because its one of those words my mum uses quite a lot. And I had no idea the Californian education system was like that....you were joking about Lindsay Lohan, right??

  13. She sounds s s s super...! Am not sure which is worse - having a daughter who is cynical or one who can't spell! At least she saw the funny side of it.

The anon things are spam. It's why I moderate mine. :) xx

    1. I keep hoping that, if I ignore the spam it will go away but sadly, it is just increasing. I think I will have to moderate although I've resisted (probably out of sheer laziness tbh! Hope all is well with you and your knee is feeling better xx

    2. I just took off the captcha code and the spam is so bad, 21 spam comments on one day on mine. Seems they are attracted to anything that looks like porn-ish-y. One post that has the words "sailor's hornpipe" is getting loads. May have to take that phrase out

  16. Sounds like some of my grandchildren; highly educated, intelligent, great fun, charming. BUT - can't spell for toffee; have no idea of grammar or punctuation, and have never heard of syntax. We're in for a new dark age as regards English. On the other hand my typing is full of typos, which I have to correct as I go along (and it's smashing to be able to do that).

  17. P.s. I don't mean 'some' of my grandchildren; I mean most of my grandchildren (and some of my children).

  18. Hi M & A and thank you for visiting. I find it really hard to understand why their vocabulary is so bad too. My daughter didn't know what a Garrison was this morning :-( Unbelievable really, but then they don't read like I did as a kid mainly because there is so much else to do. When I was young (waaaaay back!) TV and radio finished at midnight or thereabouts and of course there was no internet so we read books. I think they're missing out!
