Go the Fuck to Sleep...

Whenever someone says that something - anything - be it a snarky email from a pissed off future mother-in-law like this or some sort of internet wheeze, has "gone viral" I am tempted to reply 'what, like smallpox?' because the phrase annoys me for some reason.

However, I came across a new publication which has, indeed, 'gone viral' in the States and has been at the top of the New York Times best seller list.  It is a new parenting book called "Go the Fuck to Sleep".  It is hilariously funny - somehow managing to tread a delicate line between desperation and deep affection.  You can see what the Guardian wrote about it here and you can view the pdf of the whole book here.  If you can't be bothered to do either of those, then I strongly suggest you listen to the caramel tones of Samuel L. Jackson  reading it as a book at bedtime:-

As if that wasn't enough, there has already been a response produced by a guy called Nick Gisburne which is, if anything, even funnier.  It's a parody of the original but this time, aimed at teenagers.

I desperately wish I written them both myself!  Enjoy!

  1. Love the second one in particular! Luckily my ado son is not a bed-hogging type so I don't have that particular problem.

  2. Oh love them both - the first one was something I remember thinking but not saying, and the second one is very relevant to us now!

  3. Hi Sarah - you are one of the lucky ones - both of mine could sleep for England and the line about "we haven't seen the carpet since Christmas" rang a particular bell!

  4. NSM - haven't we all been there? On both counts!

  5. Forget the book “Go the F**k to Sleep”, a pathetic, soul-less, allegedly rebel, ‘children’s book’. Don’t waste your hard-earned money, instead read a BANNED book like “America Deceived II” by a real rebel and the “World’s Most Hated Author”, E.A. Blayre III.

  8. Dear Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to read my blog and comment on it. I had never heard of America Deceived or, indeed, EA Blayre III, so I did some research. Unfortunately, everything I could discover about this book leads me to suspect that it is a heap of ordure. Last link? Amazon stocks it and it has a one star rating! I think I will stick to my original choices thanks.

  11. Remembering that longing for sleep when you are a new parent made me smile.....I remember someone telling me as I wearily rocked my son in my arms 'when they are young they make your arms ache...when older they make your heart ache..'. As for carpet? I managed to see the carpet in my daughters room yesterday! I was hoovering around her as she sat on the bed texting! How stupid am I?

  12. Libby - you are no more stupid than me or many other mothers of teenagers/young adults. We all end up doing stuff for a quiet life and then asking ourselves WHY?!!

  13. Thanks for adding my poem to your blog and for the positive comments people have left for it. Unfortunately Samuel L Jackson was busy so I did the best I could with my own voice!

  14. Hi Nick - thank you for stopping by my blog. I thoroughly enjoyed your poem and, frankly, it scans better than the original anyway! I hope you get the recognition you deserve for it - maybe you should produce a written version?

  15. CQ - I used to find (read clear) the carpet every time my two went away but they just cover it again so I've finally given up! Who am I kidding... I'll clear them again and again won't I?
